SCOPE In the last two decades,wireless communications have undergone over extensive changes mostly driven by the growing number of smartphones and portable devices,Internet of Things,intelligent transportation systems,etc. To deal with the ever-growing demand for high-speed and high-quality services,the existing radio frequency based technologies are under stretch and therefore there is an obvious need for looking beyond the current systems. One possible option is Optical Wireless Communications (OWC),which as a complementary wireless communication technology to the radio frequency-based systems such as cellular networks,Wi-Fi and Bluetooth,etc.,could be used in certain applications to ease the pressure on the spectrum usage. The OWC technology covering infra-red,ultra-violet and visible light bands offers advantages such as free license,wide bandwidth,inherent security and no radio frequency based interference,and can be used in both indoor and outdoor environments.  

This workshop will cover the fundamental concepts of the OWC systems (mostly visible light communications – VLC - and free space optics - FSO) focusing on the key issues,challenges,solutions and applications. It will cover the theoretical concept supported by data generated with simulation and experimental measurements.
